Uganda's film industry is growing. Across the country, filmmakers are telling stories, producing films, building audiences and creating opportunities. But as the industry grows, so must the financial systems that support the people behind it.

For years, many, filmmakers have navigated an industry filled with passion and creativity, but also financial uncertainty. Irregular incomes, limited access to financing and the pressure of funding productions have made it difficult for many creatives to build long-term financial stability.

The Uganda Filmmakers SACCO is changing the conversation by encouraging filmmakers to think beyond individual survival and embrace the power of collective financial growth.

This vision came to life through the first national regional activation exercise, which took the SACCO message across six regions in just 10 days.

From Arua to Gulu, Lira, Soroti, Moroto and Jinja, the activation team travelled across the country, meeting filmmakers, starting conversations and introducing them to the opportunities that come with saving, owning shares and building wealth together.

It was a journey that came with its own challenges.

There were buses, taxis, bodas and long walks. There were long distances to cover and new places to navigate. But the mission remained clear: to bring the conversation about financial discipline and collective wealth creation closer to Uganda's filmmakers.

Taking the Wealth Conversation to the Regions

The regional activations were more than mobilisation exercises.

They were opportunities to sit with filmmakers and have honest conversations about the realities of working in the film industry.

What happens when filmmakers begin to save consistently?

What happens when creatives come together and invest collectively?

What happens when an industry that has traditionally operated as individuals begins to build systems that allow its members to support one another financially?

These were some of the questions that emerged during the different sessions.

The conversations showed that there is a genuine need for platforms that help filmmakers become more financially disciplined and resilient.

The Uganda Filmmakers SACCO is built around this opportunity—to encourage filmmakers to save, acquire shares and participate in a collective structure that can unlock greater financial benefits over time.

The Power of Showing Up

One of the biggest highlights of the activation tour was the commitment to physically reach filmmakers where they are.

For 10 days, the journey moved from one region to another, with each stop bringing new conversations, new connections and new possibilities.

We appreciate Ssalongo Kasule Douglas Benda for taking on the responsibility of carrying this message across the country.

The journey was not always easy, but he continued to show up, entering rooms and speaking about issues that matter to the long-term sustainability of Uganda's film industry.

The message was simple but powerful:

Passion is important, but passion must be supported by financial discipline.

Talent can open doors, but financial literacy helps us remain in the room.

And when filmmakers come together, we have an opportunity to build systems that can create value beyond individual projects.

The People Who Made It Possible

The success of any regional activation depends on the people on the ground who believe in the mission and are willing to support it.

We appreciate the regional coordinators who helped make this journey possible: Anthen in Arua, Gloria in Gulu, Lovis in Lira, Joshua in Soroti, Sharon in Moroto and Emmanuel in Jinja.

Their contribution demonstrates the power of collaboration.

When people choose to open doors, mobilise communities and create space for important conversations, they help move an entire industry forward.

The Conversations Are Only the Beginning

Perhaps one of the most important outcomes of the regional activations was the conversations that continued after the sessions.

Filmmakers began to see the importance of working together.

They began to recognise that the challenges facing the industry cannot always be solved individually.

A filmmaker may have talent, but collective financial strength can create opportunities that one person may struggle to access alone.

This is the power of a SACCO.

It creates a platform where individuals can contribute to something bigger than themselves while also working towards their own financial growth.

The responsibility now lies with every attendee to take the next step—to fulfil the minimum requirements, remain consistent with savings and shares, and actively participate in the growth of the SACCO.

Because the real benefits of collective wealth creation come through consistency.

The Journey Continues

The first half of the first national regional activation exercise may be complete, but the journey is far from over.

The Uganda Filmmakers SACCO is preparing to take the conversation to Central and Western Uganda, continuing the mission of reaching filmmakers across the country.

The goal is bigger than registration.

It is about building a culture of financial discipline.

It is about encouraging filmmakers to plan for the future.

It is about creating a community where wealth can be built individually and collectively.

And ultimately, it is about creating a film industry that is not only creatively successful but also financially empowered and sustainable.

From Arua to Jinja, the message has been carried.

The conversations have begun.

The connections have been made.

Now, the work continues.

Uganda's filmmakers have stories to tell.

Now, together, we must also build the wealth to sustain the storytellers.​​​​​​​
