Nedda: Film Screening Sparks Urgent Action Against Malaria on World Malaria Day
April 25, 2025 — Kampala, Uganda
On World Malaria Day, an inspiring gathering took place in Kampala to not only commemorate the lives affected by malaria but to ignite a powerful movement for change. At the heart of the event was the screening of Nedda, a gripping 15-minute film that casts a spotlight on malaria's deadly toll, particularly within vulnerable communities like the slums.
Nedda, starring acclaimed actor Cyrus Bugaba, tells a poignant story that reflects the harsh realities many families face. The film follows a young man mourning the death of his sister, a tragedy that began with a simple headache. As the symptoms were brushed off, what seemed minor quickly turned fatal. The story drives home a critical message: malaria is a silent killer that thrives on neglect and underestimation.
The screening event was honored by the presence of HON. HAJJAT MINSA KABANDA, who pledged her ministry's support to the cause. In her remarks, she emphasized the urgent need for sustained efforts against malaria, highlighting that awareness and early action are critical to saving lives.
A doctor speaking at the event added a sobering perspective, noting:
"When outbreaks like Ebola claim a few dozen lives, the world rightly takes notice. Yet malaria quietly kills up to 50 people a day in Uganda, often without the same urgency or alarm."
Beyond raising awareness, Nedda marks the launch of a broader, action-driven campaign. The project aims to screen the film across seven slum communities, using storytelling as a catalyst for change. These efforts will be paired with month-long community activities, including:
Cleaning drives to eliminate mosquito breeding sites
Distribution and promotion of mosquito nets
Educational talks about early detection and treatment
Open-air film screenings to sustain public engagement
Organizers stressed that "Nedda" is not just a film; it is a tool for mobilization. By blending emotional storytelling with hands-on action, the campaign seeks to create a lasting impact in areas hardest hit by malaria.
With Cyrus Bugaba’s moving performance leading the way, and with leaders like HON. HAJJAT MINSA KABANDA, adding their voice to the cause, the fight against malaria is gaining fresh momentum.
The mission is clear:
To encourage preventive behaviors, empower communities, and save lives, one story, one action, one community at a time.
Together, we can fight malaria. Together, we can win.
